| With its rich history dating back to the days of the Mayflower, Massachusetts people have been busy settling towns and building roads for hundreds of years. The eastern half of the state in particular is very densely settled with countless back roads connecting the oldest cities and towns as well as the newest suburban developments. Obviously, such a geographic environment requires extraordinarily detailed maps. In order to offer the comprehensive level of detail that Massachusetts demands, we have used an exceptionally large scale of 1:80,000 (1 inch to 2.9 miles). At that scale, we can display and label the Massachusetts road network as comprehensively as possible. We can also show virtually all the small lakes and streams that dot the Bay State, as well as the other types of backcountry detail that our Atlas & Gazetteer volumes are known for. And, the atlas contains a full Index of placenames. and Map Features, so you can look up whatever city, town, mountain, pond, brook, beach or other geographic feature you want to find. A mosaic of the maps would measure approximately 12 feet wide by 8 feet high. There are also detailed Street maps, at a 1:32,000 scale (1" to 0.5 miles) for Boston, Worcester and Springfield. |
